Summer/Fall Issue 2009
Camp Almanac
Summer is still here, but there are definite signs that Fall is not far away. The sumac trees have already begun showing signs of red coloration, and Lake Pepin isn’t as warm as it was only a month ago. Temperatures are also low enough at night to encourage the wearing of a light jacket. The sky shows that the stars of the Summer Triangle are advancing westward into the sunset, while Fall constellations such as the Great Square of Pegasus, Perseus the hero, and Queen Cassiopeia are coming around to take prominent positions above. And, waking up just before it begins to get light in the morning, you can spot Orion the mighty Hunter in the east (look for the three stars in a row that form his belt), followed by his trusty dog, Sirius (the brightest star in the sky). (Interesting fact: August is referred to as the dog days of summer because Sirius, the dog star, rises just before the sun. Earlier people believed that the combined heat of the bright star Sirius and the Sun made August hotter than the rest of the months.)
Director’s Chat: Thanks for a Great Summer
Looking back over this summer, it is hard to imagine all that happened over the course of eight weeks. We served about 800 campers again this year, with many of the programs completely full. Our campers did everything from horseback riding to sailing on Lake Pepin to canoeing to kayaking to swimming to biking to hiking on the Superior North Shore Trail to ... well, you get the picture: it was a busy summer!
We hosted staff and campers from the United States, England, Scotland, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand, so we got to meet some great folks from all over the world. And, to top it all off, we also met some former staff and campers during our Alumni Camp in July to help us celebrate our 75th summer.
But now that summer camp has concluded, we are already looking forward to next year. We will be accepting registrations for 2010 starting on December 1st. Here are the dates:
Week 1: June 20-25
Week 2: June 27-July 2
Kickapoo Camp: July 6-9
Week 3: July 11-16
Week 4: July 18-23
Week 5: July 25-30
Week 6: August 1-6
Week 7: August 8-13
We can't wait to see you all again in about 9 months!
Full Steam Into Fall
Just because summer camp has ended doesn't mean that camp is closed. In fact, quite the contrary! We've already begun hosting retreat groups, which we do year-round. The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and Carleton College of Northfield have already held their resident hall staff retreats to prepare for their upcoming school year, and several more universities, churches, musical ensembles, school groups, and adult groups are still yet to come. And, while the weather is still warm, we will be working to make some new developments in preparation for next year.
Want to know what it's like to be at camp in the Fall, Winter, or Spring? The Lodge and the cabins can all be rented, and many camp activities are available to enjoy, such as swimming, archery, the Challenge Course, and (for those that love snow) the Sled Hill. Meals in the Dining Hall can also be provided. We do fill our available dates quickly (sometimes a year in advance), so calling early is advisable to see what is still open: 1-651-388-4724.
