Camp Almanac

Camp has probably seen more snow so far this winter than it has for several of the past winters.  The basketball court has turned into a boot hockey arena, and many of our weekend retreat groups have had a lot of fun going down the sled hill.  You can ski all around camp, and the camp director’s children have gone for many rides on the family dog-sled.  The Barred owls and Great Horned owls have been quite vocal in the backwoods, especially at night.  Deer have blazed trails all throughout the snowy woods on Deer Island.

Camp Pizza Extravaganza and Parent Information Nights (Camp P.E.P.I.N.)

Camp Pepin is coming to a location near you (http://www.camppepin.org/informationnights.htm)!  All new and returning campers and parents are welcome to join us any evening below from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. for pizza and to hear what’s happening at camp this summer.  Please RSVP by calling our Camp Office Manager at the Red Wing Family YMCA office at 651-388-4724 so that we know how many pizzas to order!

Maple Syrup & Family Fun Day: Saturday, March 28th, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Join us at YMCA Camp Pepin for our Maple Syrup & Family Fun Day, where we will doing maple syruping demonstrations with trees that we tap right here at camp.  Archery, the Climbing Tower, and Arts & Crafts will also be open.  And, of course, we will be serving pancakes and sausage with real maple syrup.  The event is free, and everyone’s invited to see what camp is all about!  Please RSVP with Joetta at 651-388-4724.

Kimmy’s Korner

Hi folks!  It’s Kimmy the Kayaker.

Congratulations to Christopher Dillon of Rochester, MN - the winner of my Holiday Issue game - who correctly answered this question:

In the summer of 2008, camp was visited by one of the music world’s greatest sensations: the band Googlygonk.  One of the songs that you can listen to on our website’s new online Camp Song Book is actually performed by Googlygonk.  In fact, you can even hear the crowd cheering the band’s name at the end of the song.  Which song is it?

(Hint: This song involves moving a lot of body parts, starting with your thumbs.)

The answer is: “Aroostasha.”  Thank you to everyone that played – it was great to hear from you!

My game for the Spring Issue is this:

February’s Photo-of-the-Month (http://www.camppepin.org/photo%20galleries/Photo%20of%20the%20Month/February2009Photo.htm) is a great picture of our 2008 Theater Camp II.  But there’s something wrong with this picture.  What is it?

Email your answer to camp@redwingymca.org.  A winner will be drawn from the entries with the correct answer, and he or she will receive a YMCA Camp Pepin Stadium Chair from our Camp Store.  The winner’s name and the answer will also be posted in Kimmy’s Korner in the Spring Issue of The Lakesider.  Anyone can play, including campers, staff, and alumni.  Good luck!
